Main events for Tonga 2012

1. WOWS CONCERT with Vanessa Quai - Free concert to raise awareness and encouraging young people to Walk ON walk Strong what ever circumstances they go through in life. Donations at the door, we received TOP $1175.90. HRH Princess Latufuipeka was the guest of honor of the night. Local artist started off the night with beautiful singing and dancing before Vanessa came on stage!

 

2. WOWS WALK : Started at8am from Maamaloa Ground. Prayer led by Etuate Manuofetoa, and the walk started led by the Toloa Brass Band, followed by Hon. Fatafehi O Lapaha Tuita, which she has been supporting the WOWS WALK since it started in 2009. Then followed by hundreds of people who came to support, including a float prepared by one of our main sponsors - TCC.

Every year (since 2009) we supported the Child Cancer Foundation of Tonga (CCFT) with our WOWS WALK, and people donate $1 or more and join the walk. The past 3 years (2009-2011) TKF has donated all funds raised from WOWS walk to CCFT, Total of $14,000.

WOWS WALK 2012 received $1,024.30 which will be donated again to the CCFT.

FIRST FLASH Mob ever done in Tonga - was during the WOWS Walk this year with 150+ young people, which surprised those who joined the walk that morning. Thank you Ebonie Fifita and On the Spot team for believing in our children and you teach them well!! IT WAS AMAZING!!

3. WOWS Shave or Save: This was our first Shave or Save in Tonga. People nominate someone to shave and donate $1,000. Every dollar collected from this SOS went to the Tae Kami Foundation - Support Fund for the children with Cancer. This fund would be available to support the parents and their children directly or indirectly through the CCFT (that's if CCFT need something for the resource center or to help a child) Also available for the doctor at the oncology ward to request support for a particular child or family. 

Money raised during the SOS 2012 = TOP $32,000. This goes to our first TKF Support Fund to help our children with cancer.

4. WOWS Christmas Carols - It was a concert for the family! Guest of Honor for the night was HRH Princess Latufuipeka. The Police Brass Band also entertained the crowds with the Lavengamalie Youth, Vanessa Quai, Pa'ila 'Aholelei, Sione Palavi, Samiu 'Atiola with his violin, Niu Kassa girls, Andrew Baker, Vahoi and her sisters, Amelia Kami and the WOWS Youth Choir. Prayer led by Rev. Alifeleti 'Atiola and the lighting of the candles remembering those who have passed on to cancer.

Brumbies star makes WOWS surprise visit

BRUMBIES rugby star Henry Speight made a surprise appearance at the Walk On Walk Strong campaign at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.

Speight, who arrived at the Nadi International Airport on Friday, was one of the sports stars that supported the campaign.

Despite the fact that it was a short visit, Speight, who flies back to Canberra today, said the trip was for a worthy course.

"I'm so honoured to be part of this campaign," Speight told Times Sport.

"Looking at the eyes of these cancer patients just urged me to help them. This is an experience of a lifetime for me and I feel so blessed to have offered something to help these kids," he said.

Speight, on crutches, joined the walk from the Vodafone Arena to Suva Grammar School and back.

His mum also died from the same disease when he was seven years old.

 I felt very humbled by your support during the WOWS events this weekend and what an amazing events!  I just want to personally thank each and everyone of you,  for your desire to support our children with cancer. I also thank, Fiji Cancer Society and the Ministry of Health for allowing WOWS to work together for the betterment of the lives of our children!

 From our hearts to yours we send our sincere thanks and appreciation of all your wonderful work and support!.

 To all our WOWS SOS nominees and their sponsors! You have taken on the role of ambassadors to raise the awareness of childhood cancer and gather support from family, friends and colleagues. Your kind act of shaving shows children with cancer who where there on Saturday that we do care and it is ok to be bald.

 Hearing  the words, ‘You have cancer’ leaves people feeling shocked, overwhelmed  and helpless. You all have helped provided a platform to create awareness of childhood cancer, as well as to raise funds to help needy families of children with cancer.

 

All funds went into Fiji Cancer Society- WOWS funds for two projects:

 

1. Support fund for our children who are fighting on with cancer. (working very closely with the doctors on this to find out the immediate needs of the patients)

 

2, Resource or Support Center for Children  with Cancer and their families -  provide a place for cancer patients, family members, parents support group - It's a place away from hospital rooms!

We will be keeping you informed of progress  of the above projects.

 

The WOWS and FCS finance team are doing a detailed summary and hoping to give us the report by sometime next week. There will be a media conference to publicly thank you and announce the money  that you have helped up raised. We will email you the details on venue and time.

To all our enthusiastic 124 volunteers, We thank them for their hard work during the concert and big helpers during the Saturday events. Without the kindness and support of our volunteres  we wouldn't be able to deliver great and successful events.

 I appreciate all you did and may God bless each and everyone of you!

WOWS Fiji - "We are not alone"

OESTEOSARCOMA cancer victim Esther Lagi was in tears yesterday when she saw the huge response from the public in the Walk On Walk Strong Save it or Shave it (WOWS SOS) at the Vodafone Arena.

The 16-year old who was diagnosed with the bone cancer last December said she was overwhelmed by how much people cared. "When I found out I had cancer I felt so alone. It was so unfair! My family was fighting with me but that's as far as it went, you felt so secluded from society and the world and so alone fighting this battle," she said.

"Sitting here, watching so many people shave their hair to raise money for cancer victims and seeing so much support from corporate companies and the public has been so overwhelming. You don't feel alone somehow - all this people care, all this people are fighting with you."

Ms Lagi had to give up school and sports - two things she loved. She did not enrol with her colleagues at Rishikul Sanatan College in January because of chemo treatment. A day after her 16th birthday on May 8, she had to have both her legs amputated as the cancer had spread rapidly.

"I didn't feel like I was normal. I felt ugly and wrong, not only for the world but to myself. It was so hard for me to be around people because I was so shy of my amputated legs and my hair loss.

"I've slowly gotten over all that, it's been hard to get your self-esteem back but its support like this from all these people that have made me feel normal again." She received a surprise when her favourite Fijian rugby player, ACT Brumbies wing Henry Speight hand-delivered her a wheelchair at the Vodafone Arena. "I can't stop blushing," she said. Ms Lagi thanked the contributions from the corporate companies and the public for the WOWS campaign and encouraged other cancer victims to remain strong in their battle of the illness.

"We are not alone, we are beautiful and we are survivors. Do not give up!"

Brumbies winger Henry Speight - Join the WOWS Fiji Shave or Save

Brumbies winger Henry Speight is the latest high profile rugby player to join the WOWS Shave or Save campaign. Speight, whose Super 15 team missed out on qualifying for the Super 15 play offs, will have his head shaved on Friday in Canberra in the presence of his teammates.

The former Queen Victoria School flyer's mum, Adi Litia Levulevu died from cancer in 1996. And his family are giving their full support for the campaign.

A Brumbies autographed jersey will be sent to WOWS for auction next month. Speight's elder sister Davila, said "we are so overwhelmed to be part of this campaign.

This is one area of discussion for our family and we are overwhelmed to support the drive". Last year, Speight shaved his head during the WOWS campaign, however, they wanted to raise the bar this time.

Davila recalls her late mum who died from the disease. "We wanted to take our support this year to another level, Henry shaved his hair last year and this time we wanted to do it formally and try to raise some funds to be directed to the campaign."

She said they wanted to raise $1,000 from Speight's shaving, however, she received good news yesterday, that some of Speight's teammates have volunteered to support him.

When their mother died, Davila said they had little knowledge about cancer because they were young. "But now I am urging the public to make a move and support the campaign.

"There are lives out there that need help and we should stand up for it," Davila added.

The autographed Brumbies jersey is expected to arrive sometime this week.

Flying Fijian captain Netani Talei is another player that has supported the campaign.

Former Fiji flyhalf Nicky Little also shaved his hair off last year while the team was preparing for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

COMING from a poor family where his parents used to do dual jobs to support him, an emotional Netani Talei feels the pain of parents whose children are diagnosed with cancer.

Tavua-born Talei said he struggled through his life and sometimes things did not go their way.

He said his parents worked hard to push him through his rugby career and he was grateful that they were healthy.

"My parents had to do lot of things and they had to balance two jobs just to buy me rugby boots," he said.

"It is so painful and emotional to see small children suffering from cancer," Talei said in a trembling voice.

Talei is the latest personality to join Walk On Walk Strong (WOWS) save or shave campaign to raise money to help children with cancer.

"I am blessed in many ways to have a chance to give something back to my community," he said.

"I could have shed tears when I saw small children with cancer but I tried to be strong because I want to bring smiles on their faces."

Emotions were at height in the children's ward as former national 15s skipper Talei visited the children in the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH).

Seventeen-month-old Sevuloni Lasei is diagnosed with bone marrow failure and he will be one of the many children in Fiji that will benefit from this campaign.

His mother Asena Takayawa said her only son was going in and out of hospital since birth.

Takayawa said she was very disturbed by her son's condition and hospital was Lasei's second home.

She was thankful to Talei for taking time out in visiting the children which made them smile.

"This (Talei's visit) really means a lot to me because it shows that there are people who also care for the sick children in the hospital," Takayawa said.

Doctor Khalid Mahmood, a consultant paediatric, said he was dealing with 20 cancer patients at CWMH and the children were excited to see Talei.

"There is like a big party going on when children see these stars visiting them," Dr Mahmood said.

He said he could feel the happiness coming around with the personalities visit because it brought smiles on children's faces.

Talei's son, Jayden Talei said he was proud of his "daddy".

"I am happy that daddy is doing this," he said.

Wife, Alana Bentley said she was proud of her husband who was giving back something to the community of Fiji.

"This is for a great cause and we are happy and blessed that our children are healthy," Mrs Bentley said.

"I have always supported him (Talei) throughout his rugby journey and I will always support him in whatever he does."

Talei also presented his Pacific Nations Cup rugby jersey and rugby ball autographed by the national side to the children.

He flies out of the country tomorrow to join his club Edinburgh and he will shave his head at Edinburgh Rugby Club in Scotland on August 4
